Question
What are some possible hypotheses with biochemical basis/ explanaitions that allow for such physical mechanisms to be present?
Vulcans are excellent long-distance runners, even in the low oxygen environment and low atmospheric pressure found on Vulcan. They are also known to be physically faster and stronger than humans It has been suspected that these differences have something to do with more efficient oxygen binding. However, this has not been able to be studied until now, and many hypotheses have circulated to explain the expected improvement in oxygen binding. A rogue Vulcan has boldly violated a tradition that honors the sanctity of Vulcan blood, by offering a sample of his blood for research purposes Patient History Sybok (shown at right) and his half-brother Spock shared the same father, but Sybok's mother was Vulcan rather than human. He has exhibited wild behavior since childhood, and has not calmed with age Recently, Sybok sent a message to the Starfleet Academy Research Center, in his usual air of confidence. Against Vulcan tradition, he offered a sample of his own blood to the biochemistry laboratory, "to prove Vulcan superiority over humans." The situation caused quite a stir politically, but negotiations ultimately resulted in the blessing of the Vulcan ambassador and Starfleet's acceptance of Sybok's offer You are a part-time student researcher at Starfleet Academy, working with the team charged with discovering the mystery in Vulcan blood Determine the biochemical mechanism that allows for more efficient oxygen binding in Vulcans than in humans Hypothesize What are your top three hypotheses about the underlying basis and associated biochemical mechanism that may be causing the observed outcomes? 2.Explanation / Answer
1) The oxygen binding capacity of Vulcans is very high. The same amount of RBC in vulcans can bind to much more amount of Oxygen thus supplying more energy and strength to run long distances.
2) Vulcans must be having more amount of Haemoglobin present in their RBC's. haemoglobin is responsible for binding with oxygen. More amount of hemoglobin would lead to more amount of oxygen binding.
3) Vulcans must be having more amount of RBC's in their body. More RBC will allow for binding of more oxygen and thus allow for more energy input.
