d.)2 Short essay question: ( 10%) [ Be sure to answer this question in a clear, concise and understandable manner, using only complete sentences ( no fragments) . As you formulate your answer, consider how you would explain it to someone who does not already know the answer If you were riding in a bus that was traveling at a constant speed of 30 mi/hr when you decide to toss a ball straight up in the air, where will the ball land ( in your lap, in front of you, or behind you) and why? (briefly explain your answer) Now if the bus accelerated when the ball was at its peak in the air, where would it land and why? Revised Fall 2015 PH2010EXAMIF15TR

Explanation / Answer

Newton's law of inertia: An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced/external force.

So if bus is moving with constant velocity and you toss up ball straight up in the air, the ball will land in front of you. Since you and ball both are moving with constant speed, so the dierection of ball will not change.

Now if bus accelerated when the ball was at its peak in the air, the will land behind of you. Because now your speed is more than the speed of ball.
