Question

Problems: Show all work for maximum partial credit 3. (20 points) A block of mass 1500 g lying on a airly" smooth, horizontal surface is connecied to an ideal spring with a spring-constant of 0.80x10 N/m. ·The spring is compressed a distance of 10 cm from equilibrium. .The spring is then released and the block slides from its compressed position ( 10 cm) to its equi librium position ( 0cm). * You can neglect static friction and only consider kinetic friction with coefficient -5.0 x 10-1 (a) Calculate the work done by the spring force during the move iven- 15-6,1 80 no 2 a-o (b) Calculate the work done by the friction force during the move. (c) Calculate the net work done on the block during the move. -3 M N (d) Use your answer from part (e)to calculate the block's speed at the end of the move. 2.

Explanation / Answer

a) work done by spring force ws = 1/2kx^2

ws = 1/2*0.8*10^2*(0.1)^2 = 0.4 J

b) work done by friction force wf = -f*x = -mue*mg*x

wf = -0.05*1.5*9.8*0.1 = -0.0735 J

c) w net = ws+wf = 0.3265 J

d) from work enrgy theorem

w net = kinetic energy

1/2mv^2 = 0.3265

v = sqrt(2*0.3265/1.5) = 0.659 m/s
