Question

Additional Materials Electric Potential 5 45 points 1 3.0.004 My In the diagram below each unit on the horizontal axis is 5.00 cm and each unit on the vertical axis is 4.00 cm. The equipotential lines in a region of uniform electric field are indicated by the blue lines. (Note that the diagram is not drawn to scale.) 12 V 24V s0v (a) What is the direction of the electric field? (b) Determine the magnitude of the electric field in this region. V/m (c) Determine the shortest distance for which the change in potential is 3 V Tutorial Additional Materials Electric Potential

Explanation / Answer

(a) First option is the correct answer.

Explanation -

Direction of electric field is from higher potential to the lower potential and in the perpendicular direction.

(b) Here, you have to draw a right triangle to figure the distance from one equipotential line to the next.
You know that arctan(4 cm / 5 cm) = 38.6 ° and 180 -90 - 38.6 = 51.4°
So, 5cm*cos51.4 = 3.12 cm

therefore, magnitude of electric field in this region = 6 V / 3.12 cm = 1.923 V/cm = 192.3 V/m

(c) Now, if 3.12 cm is a 6 V change the a 3 V change is 3.12 / 2 = 1.56 cm = 15.6 mm
