1. The pathogen responsible for the illness is Salmonella bacteria.
2. This outbreak could have been prevented by not keeping the chicken overnight in the warm oven.The warm oven provided optimum conditions for the growth of bacteria. Instead if the chicken was kept in the refrigerator it would have prevented this outbreak.
3. Salmonella can be detected by stool test.
Samonella can also be detected by their ability to produce hydrogen sulfide through the use of Triple sugar iron agar test. Craigie's tube can also be used for Salmonella detection. Additionally PCR can also be used for detection of Samonella DNA.
4. Gram Staining, oxidase test and culture on Mac Conkey Agar. These tests were performed.
Cytochrome oxidase negative means that the bactaeria does not produce the enzyme cytochrome oxidase.
Lactose negative means that the bacteria do not ferment the sugar lactose and do not produce any acid. Therefore on MacConkey agar, they produce translucent colonies.
