Question
Three capacitors are connected to a battery as shown in the figure below. Their capacitances are C1-3C, C2-C, and C3 = 5C. C2 Cs (a) What is the equivalent capacitance of this set of capacitors (in terms of C)? (b) State the ranking of the capacitors according to the charge they store, from largest to smallest. (c) Rank the capacitors according to the potential differences across them, from largest to smallest. (d) Assume C3 is increased. Explain what happens to the charge stored by each capacitor Q3, Q,, and Q2 increases. Q3 and Q2 increases; Q1 decreases All charges stay the same 03 and Q1 increases; Q2 decreases Need Help?Read ItExplanation / Answer
C2 and C3 are in parallel connection,
C' = C2 + C3 = 6 C
now C' and C1 are connected in series,
1/Ceq = 1/6C + 1/3C
Ceq = 2 C .........Ans(A)
(B) Q1 > Q3 > Q2
(C) C' is 6C and C1 is 3C.
so C1 will have greater voltage drop across it.
and C2 and C3 will have same voltage as they are connected in parallel.
Q1 > Q2 = Q3
(D) C3 is increased then C' will increase.
so volatge across C1 increases. then Q1 also increases.
Ans: Q3 and Q1 increases, Q2 decreases.
