Question

On the Apollo missions to the moon, two astronauts flew the Lunar excursion module (LEM) to the surface of the moon and one astronaut remained in the command module (CM) circling the moon. The orbit was 110 km above the lunar surface. (This was to avoid close orbits to mass concentrations that could affect the orbit). At the height of the CM the acceleration due to gravity of the moon is about 1.63 m/s2 . When the orbit took the CM to the far side of the moon, the astronaut was completely out of touch with the rest of humanity. How long was the astronaut alone?

Explanation / Answer

According to the concept of The motion

Given that

Distance h=110 km

Acceleration a=1.63 m/s^2

Now we find the time taken to travel the astronaut alone

H=1/2 gt^2

110000=1/2*1.63*t^2

t^2=2*110000/1.63=134969.33

Time t=367.4 sec
