6. (15 pts) An L-2 tool steel link (E a forging machine is pin connected to the forks at it as shown. are pinned for buckling with respect to the x-x axis, whereas from the figure on the right the ends are fixed to the y-y axis. (1) (5 pts) Determine the maximum load P with respect to 200 GPa, ?,-703 MPa) in i s ends Note from the figure on the left that the ends 30 mm 10mm- 600 mm the x-x axis. (2) (5 pts) Determine the maximum load P with respect to the y-y axis. of safety with respect to buckling of F.S. 2.

Explanation / Answer

Area moment of inertia about x-x axis is Ix = b*h3 / 12 = 30 * 103 / 12 = 2500 mm4

Area moment of inertia about y-y axis is Iy = h*b3 / 12 = 10 * 303 / 12 = 22500 mm4

1)

For column with both ends pinned, critical buckling load = pi2 EI / L2

= 3.142 * 200*109 * 2500*10-12 / 0.62

= 13964 N = 140 kN

2)

For column with both ends fixed, critical buckling load = 4 pi2 EI / L2

= 4 * 3.142 * 200*109 * 22500*10-12 / 0.62

= 492980 N = 493 kN

3)

For max.load, we'll have to consider lower of the two values.

Thus P should be 140 kN.

Considering F.S = 2, the load should be 140 / 2 = 70 kN
