Cutnell, Physics, 10e Anno (1 Unread) ·BACK- PRINTER VERSION NEXT Chapter 11, Problem 018 A cylinder is fitted with a piston, beneath which is a spring, as in the drawing. The cylinder is open to the air at the top. Friction is absent. The spring constant of the spring s 3900 N/m. The piston has a negligible mass and a radius of 0.010 m. (a) When the air beneath the piston is completely pumped out, how much does the atmospheric pressure cause the spring to compress? (b) How much work does the atmospheric pressure do in compressing the spring? dy (a) Number Units Units (b) Number Click if you would like to Show Work for this question: Open Show WorkExplanation / Answer
Area of piston = (pi r^2) = 3.14*10^-4 m^2.
Standard air pressure = 101,325Pa.
Force on piston when air is evacuated = PA = (101,325 x 3.14*10^-4) = 31.83 N.
(a) Compression x = F/k = 31.83/3900 = 0.00816 m.
(b) Work done = ½*kx^2
= ½*3900*0.00816^2
= 0.1299 J
