Question
How far apart would a proton and an electron have to be for the electrostatic force on each one due to the other to be 700N ( that’s about what an average person weighs) { remember both have charge 1.6 x 10 -19 C, but of course they have opposite signs. This also might be helpful: k = 9.0 x 109 Nm2/C^2. }Thank you so much. Explanation / Answer
we will use:
F = k*q1*q2/r^2
here:
k = 9.0*10^9 N.m^2/C^2
q1 = 1.6*10^-19 C
q2 = -1.6*10^-19 C
since both charge are of opposite sign, the force between them will be attractive and hence negative
F = -700 N
use:
F = k*q1*q2/r^2
-700 N = (9.0*10^9 N.m^2/C^2)*(1.6*10^-19 C)*(-1.6*10^-19 C)/r^2
r^2 = 3.291*10^-31 m^2
r = 5.74*10^-16 m
Answer: 5.74*10^-16 m
