Question

Question 10 10 pts A mass of 10 kg is compressed into a spring which has a spring constant of 77 N/m. A force of 286 Newtons is applied to the mass and the mass is it held at rest in equilibrium. It travels over a horizontal surface, up an incline which has a length (not height) of 5 meters and angle of 30 degrees, and then travels over another horizontal surface with friction. How far does it travel on the last horizontal surface before it stops if the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.39? Answer in meters. Question 11 10 pts A mass of 14 kg is travelling on the inside of a circular bowl (half of a circle) with a 0.5 meter radius. It starts on the side and is released from rest. As it moves to the bottom, air resistance,

Explanation / Answer

Compression on spring

x= 286/77= 3.714 m

Using conservation of energy to find final energy at the top of ramp

Total energy of spring= potential energy at top+ kinetic energy at top

0.5* 77* 3.714^2= 10*9.8* 5 sin 30 + 0.5 * 10* v^2

v= 7.564 m/s

-----

Using work-energy theorem

Workdone by friction= change in kinetic energy

umgd= 0.5 m v^2

d= 0.5* 7.564^2/( 9.8* 0.39)

d= 7.484 m (ans)
