Question
Based on the findings in the study below, is there a positive or negative correlation between type II diabetes and consumption of coffee? Objective: High habitual coffee consumption has been associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, but data on lower levels of consumption amd on different types of coffee are sparse. Research design and methods: This is a prospective cohort study including 88.259 U.S. men of the Nurses Health Study II aged 27-47 years without history of diabetes at baseline. Consumption of coffee and other caffeine-containing foods and drinks was assessed in 1991,1995, and 1999. We documented 1,263 incidents cases of confirmed type 2 diabetes between 1991 ans 2001. Results: After adjustment for potential confounders, the relative risk of type 3 diabeted decreased with one cup of coffee per day and further decreased with 2 or 3 cups of coffee per day. Tea consumption was not substantially associated with risk of type 2 disbetes.
Explanation / Answer
The objective refers to data that positively correlates higher coffee consumption and diabetes type 2. But the results suggests a positive correlation between type 3 diabetes (Alzheimer's dementia) and higher coffee consumption but does not mention type 2 diabetes associated with coffee. Since, the data for lower coffee consumption and effects on diabetes type 2 is sparse and this study has failed to provide the same, the results are inconclusive.
