Question
For various fuels including, at least: methane (CH4), octane (C8H18), kerosene (C12H26), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (C2H5OH) and hydrogen (H2), tabulate the adiabatic flame temperature for each fuel and the moles of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced per mole of fuel. Calculate the internally reversible efficiency using the adiabatic flame temperature for the temperature of the high temperature reservoir and 300K for the temperature of the low temperature reservoir.
I need to know how to correctly go about calculating the adiabatic flame temp, moles of carbon dioxide produced, and the internally reversible efficiency. I dont need answers for each fuel just the way to set them up so I can correctly do the calculations myself.
Explanation / Answer
T(adiabatic flame) = T(ambient)+ (Change in enthalpy of reaction) / (Summation of number of moles times specific heat capacity at constant pressure)
T(ambient)= 25degrees centigrade
change in enthalpy should be found out using tables, it is difference of products enthalpy to that of reactants
moles of carbon dioxide can be found out by balancing the combustion equation
for example
CH4+ 02 + 3.76 N2---> CO2 + 2 H2O + 3.76 N2
Efficiency = 1-T(low)/ T(high)
T(low) = 300 K given T(high) = T (adiabatic flame)
