Question
A driver of a car is repeatedy Driving around a roundabout with a diameter of 100feet . The driver is traveling around 20mph when he accidentally fires his 1500 pound thrust rocket. Assume that the tires have a coefficient of friction of Us=0.8 and that the force applied byt the engine and the brakes are negligible.
What is the maximum velocity that the car can achieve around the roundabout before the tires begin to Slip?
How long will it take to teach the velocity from the instant the rocket is fired?
Explanation / Answer
centripetal force = mv^2/r
= m x v^2/100
max friction force = mu x N
N = mg
f = .8 x m g
so before slip f = centripetal dofrce
m x v^2/100 = .8 mg
v^2 = 80 x 3.28 x 9.8 ft/s^2
v = 50.71 ft/s
