However, the plant expends its heated waste water* into the Frustration River; local citizens are concerned that the heated water will raise water temperatures to the point where the endangered river smelt will die from oxygen depletion. Local biologists called into the fray report that the smelt can only withstand an average increase of 3.44

follow the steps to get the answer

find the velocity at the point where dumping is done using the continuity equation

as A1V1 = A2V2

now u know the mass of water flowing per second as u know the velocity i.e volume can be found

so find out the total heat that that will cause a chage in temp of 3.44°C.

using Q = m x Cp x 3.44°C

m we found out above in kg/s

this gives the heat per second that can be dumped

or this is the power rejected per second

efficiency = [power input - power rejected] /power input
= 1 - power rejected / power input

its given that efficiency is 34.90%

or

power rejected / power input = 1 - 0.349
= 0.651

power input required = power rejected / 0.651

we have found power rejected above

so the max power that can be safely generated = {power rejected / 0.651} x .349

= 0.536 power rejected
