Question

A piece of steel (500 grams in weight) found at an accident site was microstructurally analyzed. Grains of pearlite were observed with pro-eutectoid cementite (FC3C) at the grain boundaries. Using appropriate computer software (for density of the phases etc) the amount of pearlite was estimated to be 400 grams and the rest assumed to be pro-eutectoid cementite. From the phase diagram of the FC-FC3C system find the overall composition of this plain carbon steel the grams of a (ferrite) and cementite (Fe3C) inside the pearlite grains.

Explanation / Answer

a)let the composition of steel be x

(6.69 - x)/(6.69-0.77) = 400/500

(6.69 - x) = 4.736

x = 1.954

the overall of composition of given plain carbon steel = 1.954 %

b) grams of ferrite = (6.69 - 1.954)/(6.69-0.02) x 500

grams of ferrite = 355.02 grams

grams of cementite = 500 - 355.02

grams of cementite = 144.98 grams
