Question

Let’s pretend that you have a prepared slide of the onion root use to determine the time cells spend in each stage of mitosis. Estimate the number of cells expected to be found in each stage 7. In order to determine the time cells spend in each stage of mitosis, we take a snapshot ih mitosis, we take and count how many are in each stage. The percentage of cells in each stage will tell you how stage is relative to the others. Using the counting, you should count cells in one field (le. Don't skip around to find cells in a partiular long e prepared slide of the onion root, count 100 cells. As you are stage). (I) Percentage of cells in stage Number of cells in stage Stage Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase 100 Total Based upon the data collected, what conclusion can be made regarding the longest phase of the cell life cycle? (1) 8. Does you conclusion support your hypothesis. Be sure to state your answer in terms of your hypothesis and the data collected. (1) 9.

Explanation / Answer

7) Please refer to the following table.

Metaphase

8) The relative time span of each stage is equal to the percentage of cells found in a particular stage.

Percentage of Cells found

(p)

Calculation

{(p*24)/100}

Relative time in a particular stage

( in 24 hours)

We see that onion cells spen approx. 13-14 hours(per day) in Interphase, i.e, the cells are actively dividing but have not entered the mitotic phase. Thus Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle.

9) Our conclusion is that most cells spend their time in Interphase. Hence the hypothesis that most of the cells are in a non dividing stage(~55%) is true. The data collected and analysed supports our hypothesis. Uncontrolled cell division leads to tumor and may lead to cancer.

Stage Number of Cells in Stage Percentage of Cells Interphase 55 55 Prophase 28 28
