Question

An expensive level transmitter (installed at the bottom of tank) has failed and the plant does not have a spare. The instrument tech tells you that the department has several pressure gauges that could be used as a substitute until the replacement level transmitter arrives If the maximum tank height is 360 inches and the specific gravity of the fluid is 0.85 calculate the max pressure reading a replacement pressure gauge must display for this application. You may assume the tank is vented to the atmosphere

Explanation / Answer

The specific gravity of the fluid is given = 0.85

Therefore,

The density of the fluid = density of water x specific gravity of the fluid

The density of the fluid = 1000 x 0.85 = 850 Kg/ m^3

Now , the pressure exerted by the fluid that will be recorded by the Pressure guage = Density of the fluid x depth x acceleration due to gravity = p x h x g

Now , depth h = 360 in. = 360 x 0.0254 m = 9.144 m

Therefore,

the pressure exerted by the fluid that will be recorded by the Pressure guage = 9.8 x 9.144 x 850

= 76169.52 Pa = 76169.52 x 10-5 bar = 0.76169 bar ........................................... Ans.
