Question
Problem description: you are assigned to design a piping system in an apartment building. The building is 50-ft long, 25-ft wide, and 30-feet tall. It has six rooms with each room of size 25ft times 25ft times 10ft. Each room has its own toilet, shower and two faucets. The toilet and shower are controlled by gate valves. A pump is used to send water to all the rooms at a maximum total flow rate of 40 gal/min (when half of the toilets, showers, and faucets are fully open simultaneously. The pump can only be placed on the ground and it has to be at least 5-ft away from the building. Only 2- in and 1-in diameter cast iron pipe can be used and only 1-in pipe is allowed in the building. All elbows are 90-degree regular threaded elbows. Design a piping system when the pump is placed at the corner of the building; Calculate the power requirement for the design with all losses considered;Explanation / Answer
Part 1 question is difficult as more information on the sump location is required .
Par2 - Power of a pump = q x h x SG /(3960 x pump effeciency) .
Assuming the discharge head is the height of the bulding + piping length including the elbows used inside the house = h . Flow rate is given in above question = q . SG = 1 . pump effeciency is 100% . Power of the pump can be calculated .
