Question

Mr. Anan (P.Eng.) works for an engineering consulting firm, Company Zina, which specializes in waste water management. Company Zina recently finished work for the small town of Springfield and has now been contracted to do work for another town, Magden, in an adjoining municipality where the general environment, soil conditions, and waste water management options are similar. As part of Mr. Anan's responsibilities, he will have to produce an interim report outlining the environmental analysis and proposed solutions for the town of Magden. Mr. Anan knows that he has some important family commitments around the time of the scheduled interim report and, as a result, he may have a difficult time meeting his family commitments and at the same time meeting the report's deadline. Mr. Anan's supervisor suggests that since Company Zina prepared the report for Springfield, and the analysis of the Magden conditions are likely to be similar, Mr. Anan could save time to help meet the deadline by copying the field data and analysis of the Springfield report into the Magden report. What is the dilemma for the Professional Engineer (P.Eng)? Which duties of the Professional Engineer are in conflict? What is a reasonable decision and course of action? What is a similar situation that students might face?

Explanation / Answer

Anwer-1) P.Eng has to prepare the interim report outlining the enviromental analysis and proposed solutions for the town magden and also he has some family commitments which puts him in dilemma.

Answer-2) P.Eng being the worker of Zina company has the responsibility of preparing the report and proposal but at the same time he has family duties, thus family commitments and the reports are in conflict.

Answer-3) P.Eng has to balance between the work and family duties, although his duties are in conflict, he has to first set the priority based on the criticality, as the magden report and proposal seem to be critical he should not just copy the data from Springfield report rather be seriously preparing the report if could manage the family commitments by delaying or explaining them the reasons.

Answer-4) Students are most often in such situations, when they have the assignments given and at the same time some family ocassion comes, however copying the assignment from others to meet the deadline seem to be saving time but has no worth, the purpose of assignment is not served, hence with management and balance between family and studies the work can be done even before the deadline.
