Question

Suppose you are selecting a manufacturing process for a small connecting rod that can be made by sand casting , forging, investment casting or die casting processes. Which of the processes will you choose if the quantities of production are:
(A) 10,000 pieces. (B) 100,000 pieces.

Explanation / Answer

Ans: Forging is suitable for the production of such a large quantity.

Reason- Sand castinhg is the time consuming process because every time new mould has to be made,so for this quantity sand casting is not perfect.Investment casting is suitable for it but it is more costly for this quantity of product we can use it but it is also time consuming as compare to forging. Forging is best suited for production of connecting rod because by the use of series production we make product in less time compare to other process. Die casting is also good for the production of connecting rod but for this quantity we will not use because first of all we have to make die for it after that the production will start and for this quantity this is not permissible and so the forging is good for this.
