Question

| An adult at rest need about 2000 kcal energy per day which is called basal metabolic rate (BMR). a) What power output does this BMR correspond to in watts? b) What is the energy of BMR been used for? After one day, where has these energy gone and in what form? c) Some people are promoting banana diet. Using the nutrition fact on this webpages https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana, How many bananas would one need in one day on BMRP Do you think if the single food Banana diet (eat only bananas) is healthy? Why or why not. (Optional, open-ended, no mark for this sub-question)

Explanation / Answer

BMR (basic metabolic rate) is define as the minimum amount of energy spend by the body while at rest in 24 hours.

a) To find the power out put of this BMR 2000 KCal -

1 KCal =1.163 watt hour

hence, for 2000KCal = 2000*1.163 = 2326Wh

b) The energy of BMR are used for basic processes in our body like maintainence of the body temperature, breakdown of complex compunds (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) into simpler ones (amino acids, glucose),blood circulation, osmoregualtion (water and salt concentration), muscle contraction.

This BMR in converted into mechanical energy by muscles and also heat energy which is produce during breakdown of complex compounds.

c) Adults at rest need about 2000KCal energy per day and an average size banana contain 121 KCal.In order to full fill BMR,one should eat approx 17 banana's per day.

d) Banana contain fibre, canbohydrates and potassium but not enough amount of protein.Mono meal diet (only banana) is not sufficient to meet the nutritional requirements of the body.
