Question
The hydraulic system shown in the figure below uses compressed air at a pressure of 300 kPa to lift a load on a platform.The area of the piston connected to the chamber of compressed air is 7 cm2, the weight of the piston is 50 N, the area of the platform is 500 cm2, the weight of the platform is 800 N, the bottom of the platform is located 1 m above the bottom of the piston, and the density of the hydraulic fluid is 900 kg/m3.
(Part A) What force is exerted by the compressed air on the piston? (0.21 kN) got the answer to part A.
(Part B) What weight mounted on the platform can be lifted by the compressed air?
(Part C) If the piston is displaced by 10 cm, what is the displacement of the platform?
Platform Pair 300 kPa ,Aston Piston 1m Hydraulic fluid
Explanation / Answer
Here,
as the pressure on both pistons will be same
part A)
force exerted by compressed air on piston = pressure * area
force exerted by compressed air on piston = 300 *10^3 * 7 *10^-4 m^2
force exerted by compressed air on piston = 210 N
part B) Now ,as the pressure on both pistons must be same
Pressure = W/(area)
300 *10^3 = W/(500 *10^-4)
W = 15000 N
the weight that can be mounted is 15000 N
part C)
as there is no change in volume of the fluid
500 * x = 7 * 10
x = 0.14 cm
the platform is displaced by 0.14 cm
