Rule 1. In addition and subtraction take only first column that contain the doubtful figure. Use the rule of round off.
Rule 2. In multiplication and division , carry the result to the same number of significant figures that are with least number of significant figure.

Significant figures (SF) of 0.0227cm is 3. (last digit 7 is doubtful figure)
SF of 74mm (=7.4 cm) is 2. (here last gigit 2 is doubtful figure)
SF of 1.38 is 3. (here 8 is doubtful figure)
Adding three number , we get 8.8027cm. Applying Rule1, we take only upto 1st decimal place, because in 7.4cm doubtful figures comes at coulumn one. After round off , we get the answer 8.8cm
