Question
An aluminum cylindrical strain gage load cell is to be specified tomeasure a force of 100,000lbs. The maximum stress in the metal isto be 20,000 psi, the modulus of elasticity is 9.5 x 106psi, and Poisson’ ratio is 0.33. What must be the wallthickness of a 6 inch outside diameter cylinder?
If it is instrumented with four active strain gages on awheatstone bridge, two axial and two transverse as shown, with S,i.e. strain gage factor of 2.1, initial resistance of strain gagesR = 350 , and the power supply is 10V, what will be theoutput at the maximum load?
Explanation / Answer
Let the internal radius be r. Then the area over which force acts is A = (3*3 -r*r) Then since the allowable maximum stress is 20000psi Hence applying equation Stress = Force/ Area for minimum internal radius 20000 = 100000/ [ (3*3 - r*r) ] solving we get r = 2.72 approx. hence required internal diameter is 5.44 Not sure about the 2nd part. I hope I could help with the 1st part.Related Questions
