Help with this ? question number 8.12

A pressure-vessel head is fabricated by gluing the circular plate to the end of the vessel as shown. If the vessel sustains an interna, pressure of 450 kpa, determine the average shear stress in the glue and the state stress in the wall of the vessel.

Explanation / Answer

diameter of vessel, D = 450 mm thickness of vessel, t1 = 20 mm thickness of plate , t2 = 10 mm t1/D = 20/450 = 0.044 < (0.1 to 0.066) => thin pressure vessel longitudinal stress or avg shear stress acting in the glue = p*D/(4*t2) = 450*10^3*0.45/(4*0.01) = 5062.5 kN/m^2 hoop stress in the wall of cylinder = p*D/(2*t1) = 450*10^3*0.45/(2*0.02) = 5062.5 kN/m^2
