Question

Element BC is a steel wire with diameter of 0.3cm. Element AB is made out of wood with a square section (2.5cmx2.5cm). Force P is equal to 200 kg. Modulus of elasticity of steel is Es=2x106 kg/cm2 and modulus of elasticity of wood is Ew=105 kg/cm2. Determine deltaLx and deltaLy for point B

Explanation / Answer

deltaL = Force * lenght/Area* E

               = FL/AE

Along BC axis no force and therefor no delta along BC.

ALong AB,

   F= P*cos (theta)

   = P * 4/5 =0.8P

delta L(along AB) = 0.8P * 5/ 6.25 * 10^-4 * 105* 10^4 = 1.21m

delta Lx =1.21 * 3/5 = 0.731

delta Ly =1.21 * 4/5 = 0.975
