Question
A Chemical manufacturer emits air with 250 PPM of toluene at 1 atm and 30 degrees C at a flow rate of 10,000 cubic meters per minute. The air is routed to a biofilter to control total emissions to less than 110 kg/day of toluene. The biofilter contains a mix if GAC and compost with 52% voids, it is 1.6 meters deep and 200 square meters. the pressure drop prior to the biofilter is 400 Pa.
(a)determine the control efficiency needed to meet the emission criteria.
(b)predict the total pressure drop including the biofilter,in inches of water.
Explanation / Answer
Answer
a)
The following emission standards apply to new diesel engines used in heavy-duty highway vehicles. The current federal definition of a compression-ignition (diesel) engine is based on the engine cycle, rather than the ignition mechanism, with the presence of a throttle as an indicator to distinguish between diesel-cycle and otto-cycle operation. Regulating power by controlling the fuel supply in lieu of a throttle corresponds with lean combustion and the diesel-cycle operation (this allows the possibility that a natural gas-fueled engine equipped with a sparkplug is considered a compression-ignition engine).
b
Odor emissions from livestock and poultry facilities are a source of contention in many areas of Minnesota and across the United States. Under certain conditions odor emissions have been known to affect neighbors and communities at distances of a mile or more from the odor source. One odor control technology that has been shown to be both economical and effective is a biofilter. Biofiltration can reduce odor and hydrogen sulfide emissions from livestock and poultry facilities by as much as 95% and ammonia by 65%. This method of odor control has been used in industry for many years and was recently adapted for use in livestock and poultry systems. Biofilters are most easily adapted to mechanically ventilated building or on the pit fans of naturally ventilated buildings. Biofilters can also treat air vented from covered manure storage covers.
