Consider the reinforced concrete beam shown. Concrete is a material with a very small tension capacity relative to its compression capacity. Tension cracking in concrete is common. Anytime the principal tension stress is greater than the concrete's tension strength (400psi), a crack forms. Suppose that cracks initiate at points A, B, C, and D shown. They start at these points due to some combination of load and material deficiency. Trace the direction that the crack will propagate from those points. Calculate the angle of the crack for each 1" vertical grid spacing. The crack will stop when the principal tension stress is less than 400psi.
