Question
The materials testing equipment (see adjoining figure) consists of two massive crossheads, labeled A, linked by two solid A-36 steel bars, labeled B, each of 100 mm diameter and effective length 1 m. Between the crossheads are located two red brass C83400 anvils pieces, labeled C, between which is held a 2014-T6 aluminum alloy specimen, D. The brass anvils are square in cross-section, 100 mm by 100 mm, and each is 200 mm long, while aluminum specimen is in the form of a circular cylinder of 100mm diameter and 600 mm length. The equipment is adjusted until an axial compressive force of 500 kN is exerted on the specimen. A temperature rise of 80 degree C then occurs. Determine the normal stress on the aluminum specimen; Determine the normal strain on the aluminum specimen;Explanation / Answer
