PLEASE HELP ANSWER BOTH QUESTIONS WITH DETAIL EXPLANATION

The mutations in the pathway for the biosynthesis of anthocyanins, the plant pigments causing purple color, lead to the development of white flowers in petunia. You collect white petals from two independent mutant lines of petunia and grind them in a test tube in a buffer.

a) Do you think it would be possible for the purple color to appear in the test tube if the mutations in both lines affect the same gene?

b) What about the scenario in which the mutations affect two different genes?

Explanation / Answer

a) Yes, it would be possible for the purple colour to appear in the test tube because anthocyanin pigments may be red, blue or purple in the colour in the buffer medium. The pigment may be white for some reason like enzymatic malfunctioning.

b) The scenario shows same in both cases because there are five enzyme in anthocyanin synthesis pathway. Each enzymes are coded be different genes. So if 2 different genes are mutated, the pathway in two different conditions lacking the functional enzyme.
