Explanation / Answer

Natural selection is one of basic mechanisms of the evolution process. This mechanism states that nature selects everything that is “in use”, and it disregards everything that is useless; it doesn’t matter how much good the useless gene (or gene product) is. Only the usability is given the maximum importance. Note that the best things are always usable. So, natural selection selects those organisms of a population which are fastest, best and reproductively stable.

Now let us take the statements one by one:

1. Natural selection acts on species: this is true. Natural selection process would act on genes, species, individuals, organisms, races and the entire population as well. Note that natural selection always acts for the good of a species.

2. This statement is false. Natural selection is not carried by man; it is carried by nature.

3. This statement is also true. As stated before, natural selection acts on individuals.

4. The next statement is “Natural selection occurs when heritable variation in certain traits leads to improved success in food competitions”. This statement is untrue. Improved success in food competitions will lead to more competition between races; natural selection disallows this. Heritable variations should be such that a population separates from the other population, so that it does not have to compete with the other organisms for food. The long necked giraffes had an advantage; they didn’t have to compete for food with their short necked mates.

5. This statement is also true. Natural selection acts on populations as well. It selects the best population. The best population of giraffe was selected by natural selection.

6. This statement is also true.

Note that your answer was incorrect because you didn’t mark options 1 and 5. Options 2 and 4 are incorrect.

The correct options are 1, 3, 5 and 6.
