Question

A propeller is being selected for an airplane that will cruise at 2500 m altitude, where the atmospheric pressure is 75 kPa and the temperature is -1 degree C. The mass of the airplane is 1200 kg. and the planform area of the wing is 10 m2. The thrust force is given to be the lift force divided by 30, FT = FL/30. The engine speed at cruise conditions is 3200 rpm. The propeller is to operate at maximum efficiency, which corresponds to a thrust coefficient of 0.025. Calculate the diameter of the propeller.

Explanation / Answer

D = (632.7*SHP^0.2)/RPM^0.6 -Shaft Horsepower (SHP). This is the horse power at the after losses from the transmission/gearbox, ancillaries, exhaust backpressure etc. -RPM at the shaft. i.e. after reduction by a transmission/gearbox.
