Question

The shaft is supported at its ends by two bearings A and B andis subjected to the forces applied to the pulleys fixed to theshaft. Determine the resultant internal loadings acting onthe cross section through point C. The 400-N forces act in the -zdirection and the 200-N and 80-N forces act in the +ydirection. The journal bearings at A and B exert only y and zcomponents of force on the shaft. I am lost on thisproblem. I someone could show me how to start it and thenfinish it that would be awesome. Thanks.

Explanation / Answer

First determine the forces at A and B; May = 0; -0.3(800)+1.4Bz=0, Bz=171.43N Mby = 0; 1.1(800)-Az(1.4)=0, Az=6.28.57N Maz = 0; -0.7(400)-1.0(160)+By(1.4)=0, By=314.28N Mbz = 0; 0.4(160)+0.7(400)-Ay(1.4)=0, Ay=245.7N Now determine the moments about C; Mcy=0; 0.2(800)-628.57(0.5)+Mcy=0, Mcy=154Nm (There is a signissue here) Mcz=0; Mcz-0.2(400)-0.5(160)+0.9(314.28)=0, Mcz=-123Nm Hoep this helps Now find the forces in the Y and Z for the shear at C; Fy=0; Vcy=314.28-160-400=-246N Fz=0; Vcz=628.57-800=-171.43N
