Question
The steel bar has a thickness of .5 in. and is subjected tothe edge loading shown. Determine the pricipal stresses developedin the bar. -The answers are: 1=40psi and2=-40psi Please help!Explanation / Answer
You have shear stresses at the top and bottom surfaces and a singleshear stress at the side surface. = P/A Now P = PPI x Length [ PPI = pound per inch] => Ptop= Pbottom = 20 (lb/in) x 20 in =400 lb. Pside= 20(lb/in) x 2in = 40 lb. Now Atop= Abottom = 20 in x 0.5 in = 10in2 Aside = 2in x0.5in = 1in2 Let's now find . 1 = Ptop / Atop = 400 lb /10 in^2 = 40 psi Similarly |bottom |= 40 psi [ note that themagnitude is the same but the direction of the force is different] side= 40 lb / 1 in^2 = 40 psi
