Rodents do not consume chillies because they contain capsaicin, the alkaloid compound which gives rise to heat in chillies. Chillies contain capsaicin which deters rodents from consuming them, so that the chilli seeds are not destroyed by the guts of rodents. In this way, the chilli seeds can be dispersed by other animals in more favourable locations. This will cause germination of more chilli plants.
