Question
A 60 in long shaft shown in the figure below is to carry the load as shown. The shaft has to carry two 1000 lb loads as shown. The shaft has a groove in the mid-span as shown. A power of 100 hp is to be transmitted at 1200 RPM.AISI1020 steel with an ultimate tensile stress of 57,000 psi and yield strength of 43,000 psi is found to be material of choice. A notch sensitivity factor of 0.7 and a static stress concentration factor of 1.8 are found to be reasonable. Determine the maximum bending moment on the shaft.Explanation / Answer
a) maximum bending moment will occur at the point where there 1000lb load is acting
now
bending moment at a point 20 inches from the right end( point at which 1000lbs act)
=20*reaction by the right support
reaction by the right support= 1000lb and by left suppoet is also 1000 lb since the shaft is symmetrical with total download load 2000lbs
bending moment=20 inch * 1000lb=20000in.lb=20000/12ft.lb=1666ft.lb
maximum bending moment = 1666ft.lb
b) the torque on the shaft is 438.766 ft.lb
=60*100/2*3.14*1200
=0.79617hp.s=0.79617*0.7457kW.s=0.5937 kJ
1kJ=1000Nm=1000(0.2247lb)(3.289ft)=739.038 ft.lb
T=0.5937*739.038=438.766 ft.lb
