Question
In the figure shown above the tension, T2, on the slack side is 0.25 T1.
a) Determine the value of tension T1 in the pulley at location B.
b) Determine the reaction forces at bearings O and C assuming the provide simple support conditions.
c) Using MatLab command “ezplot3” or any other Matlab command, plot the shear force, bending moment and torque diagrams.
d) Identify the critical location on the shaft. Indicate the value of bending moment, shear force and torque at this location.
e) Determine the principal stresses, maximum shear stress, and Von Mises stress at the location found in (d)
f) Select a material for the shaft based on the maximum distortion energy theory and a minimum safety factor of 2.
Explanation / Answer
I can help with part a. The torque has to be equal to for the first wheel it is (300-50)*(8/2) For the second wheel it is (T1-.25T1)(6/2) set these two quantities equal and you get that T1=444.44lbs Hope that helps get you started
