Question

in this question I looked at the solution, but the last step doesn't make sense to me
because
P abs =14.2+(49.92*40+848*64*15-49.92*60+624*35)g
isn't from the graph P oil1 has height of 60 inch, but in the solution P oil1 has height is 40 which is the heigh of P oil2, thats what I understood from the graph
also the last step when time comes for conversion, I don't understand this step would u please break it down and explain this:
p abs= 14.2+(13915.2)g * 1bm/ft^3 *in *1/g *ft^3/in^3(12)^3
thank you so much

Explanation / Answer

The solution states that P abs = P atm + ............. which means that the oder started from right tube so as per notation the tube at extreme right which is open to atmosphere is considered as tube 1 and hence first tube length is 40 in coming to conversions, the atmospheric pressure is in psia (pounds per square inch in absolute scale also lbf/in^2) Hence the gage pressure is also to be converted into psia if the units of density is observed, we can find that the volume is considered in ft^3 and the height of liquid in tube is given in inches so multipling density with g and height of column, we get unit of pressure as ( lbm/ft^3 - ft/s^2 - in ) = ( lbf -in / ft^3 ) so now convert by simply replacing ft with 12 inches, to get ( lbf - in / in^3 ) = ( lbf / in^2) = psia
