Question
In hospital, as well as in anambulance, often times high purity oxygen is needed for a patient.A new process to extract oxygen from ambient air for such needs hasbeen proposed by Dr. Wood B. Engineer of the N.U.T.S Co. Thedetails are proprietary. However, he has told us it is doneusing large zeolite crystals configured as a membrane. Dr.Engineer has provided us a design sketch. You’ll noteit’s somewhat vague.
In order to be competitive with ourexisting liquidfaction process, the total work required forseparation must be less than 105 J/mole of air. Please determine the work required for separation for this proposedisothermal process assuming steady state operation of 1 mole of airprocessed. Please show the details of your work and give an idea ofhow reliable you think your calculations are. Should we considerthis method?
Note: Dr. W.B. Engineer saidfO2 (20 atm) = 0.92 and fN2 (20 atm) =0.87
