Question
One of the earliest internal combustion engine is coal gasengine built in 1860 by Jean Etienne Lenoir. The cycle in such anengine is shown on the p-v diagram.
In the figure, 5-1 is the intake process. In this process themixture of coal gas and air is drawn into the cylinder. At point 1the intake valve closes and the mixture is ignited. 1-2 iscombustion process that is close to a constant volume process. 2-3is the expansion process. 3-4 is the process in which the exhaustvalve opens and pressure in cylinder drops. 4-5 is exhaustexpelling process.
If p1 = 1 bar, T1 = 50 ºC,T2 = 1200 ºC, v4/v2 = 2, tryto simplify the cycle by following what we did in class for thegasoline engine and find T3,T4,( in Kelvin) and heataddition per unit mass in kj/kg.
In this and following problems, always assume air is the gas anduse cv = 718 J/kg·K and cp = 1004J/kg·K.
my approach: ignore the small area enclosed by points 1 and 5 onP-V diagram..
