Question

1) Explain how biological diversity contributes to speciation. Include in your answer; reasoning for conservation of biodiversity.
2)Why is variation within a species necessary for evolution to occur? Use an example to support your answer?

True or False. Please explain briefly why, you choose true or false?
1) When evolution occurs we would expect different regions with similar enviornments to all contain the same mix of plants and animals.
2) Artificial selection is not an evolutionary mechanism.
3) The effects of mutations on the evolutionary success of organisms are always unfavorable.
4) in divergent evolution, two or more species grow closer together in behaviorand other traits.
5) The theory of punctuated equilibrium is accepeted as the correct explanation for the pace of evolutionary change.

Explanation / Answer

Part I 1) Asexual reproduction is prevalent among species. And if there is mating between different species it would produce a sterile offspring or would not be possible at all. So genetic material cannot be pass to the next generation and there is always an isolation from one species to another. Hence different species mate only to species that are the same and through time, mechanism of speciation such as mutation, sexual selection and natural selection act to further create a greater biodiversity or differences among species. 2)Variation is a mechanism of evolution. Variation can happen through mutation, natural selection and sexual selection. Without it, all species would remain the same. It was hypothesized that chimps and humans shared the common ancestor but humans due to mutations in our genes we diverged and became another species. Part II 1) False. Evolution can be caused by random mutation. Not all organism would have similar mutations. 2.True. Artificial selection is man made like dog-breeding therefore it is not evolutionary mechanism. 3. False. Not always some mutations are favorable which makes an organism more adaptive to its environment. 4. False. divergent evolution is when one specie separates and becomes a new species from mechanism such as isolation. 5. True. This is where the phylogeny looks like a branching diagram. It means that we are all at one point similar but through evolution we become separate species.
