Question

4-A 25-turn circular coil with a diameter of 8.0cm and a resistance of 15 is connected to a ammeter. The coil is located perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field of 1.5 T Magnetic field is into the page but it starts to reverse direction so that in 0.25s, it points out of the page with a magnitude of 1.5 T, and remains constant afterward. a) Find the magnitude and direction of the current in the coil during the change in B b) Find the total charge that passes through the ammeter during that 0.25 s c) Find the total energy dissipated by the coil during the change in B.

Explanation / Answer

(A) induced emf = d(flux)/dt

flux = (25 x pi x 0.04^2)(1.5) = 0.1885 Wb

e = (0.1885 - (-0.1885)) / 0.25

e = 1.51 Volt

I = e /R = 0.10 A

direction -> counterclockwise

(B) q = I t = 0.10 x 0.25 = 0.025 C

(c) P = V I = 0.151 W

Energy = P t = 0.151 x 0.25 = 0.038 J
