Question

4. Displacement current n instantaneous current is applied across a parallel-plate capacitor, as th shown in e figure below. For the space created by the air-gap, a) Indicate the direction of the electric field both on the side-view figure and on op-view figure. Obviously, the current is flowing into the page if you look at the the capacitor from top. opwndw nigtche directihndat the edge of thie capactor on the (c) Indicate the direction of the Poynting vector at the edge of the capacitor on the top-view figure. Hint: No calculation is allowed!

Explanation / Answer

a)We know that the direction of electric field is from positive to negative charge.

The current also begin flowing from positive terminal of the battery towards the negative terminal.

So in the given case, the direction of E will be same as the direction of curent. (along Y axis)

B)We know that the direction of magentic of a long wire is given by right hand rule.

If we curl the fingers of right hand and thumb in the direction of current flow, the curled fingers gives direction of B field.

So for the given situation, B feild will point put of the page(along X axis)

C)We know that the Poynting verctor is perpendicular to both electric and magnetic field.

So for this case, its along Z axis.
