Question

4. In the two lens configuration, an object is placed a distance p-30cm, in front of the first lens. The second lens is a distance d 50 cm behind the first lens (Please note the diagram is NOT drawn to scale.) The focus lengths of each lens is f, - 10 cm, and f,- 10 rm. Find the following: A. The image location, qa, in reference to W wo B. The second object's location, R; in reference to the second lens. Show work. C. The second image location. qz, in reference to the second lens. Show work D. The total magnification, M, of this system. Show work. 10

Explanation / Answer

A) for first lens, do = 30 , f= 10
1/di + 1/do = 1/f
1/di + 1/30 = 1/10
di = 15cm
hence q1 is 15 cm to right of first lens.

B) for second lens, object location
p2 is 15-10 = 5

C) Object for the second lens is imaginary, hence do = -5
f= 10
1/di +1/d0 = 1/f
1/di + 1/-5 = 1/10
di = 3.33 cm
hence q2 is 3.33 cm to right of second lens.

D) Total magnification M = M1 * M2
                                        (q1/p1) *(q2/p2) = (15/30) *(3.33/5) = 0.33
