a) Consider the two blocks shown to the right, where Pulley block 2 is being pulled to the right. The ground is effectively frictionless, but there is friction between the two boxes. What is the direction of the friction force on block 2 (fz), what is the direction of the friction force on block 1 (fi), and how are the mag- nitudes of these forces related? Explain Direction of f Direction off.· Magnitude Relationship: b) Squid use jet propulsion for rapid escapes. A squid pulls water into its body and then rapidly ejects the water backward to propel itself forward. A 1.5 kg squid (not including water mass) can accelerate at 2.0 m/s2 by ejecting 0.15 kg of water. (Ignore gravity and any drag resistance from the surrouding water.) i) What is the magnitude of the force on the squid from the water? ii) What is the magnitude of the force on the water being ejected? ii) What acceleration is experienced by the water while being ejected?

Explanation / Answer

for the given diagram

a. as block 2 is moving to the right, friction acting on it is to the left
as block 1 is moving to the left, friction acting on it is to the right

also, as both frictions are action reaction pair
f2 = f1

b. M = 1.5 kg
a = 2 m/s/s
m = 0.15 kg

a. magnitude of force on squid from water = F
  F = M*a
  F = 1.5*2 = 3 N

b. magnitude of the force on the water being ejected = F = 3 N ( because both forces are action reaction pair)
c. acceleration of water = a'
  3 = 0.15*a'
  a'= 20 m/s/s
