Question

he following data on the rectilinear motion of a car that starts at timet 0 from rest at position x = 0, At time t 5.0 s, it is observed to be at position z = 40.0 m and to have an instantaneous velocity v2-11.0 m/s (a) Examine the interconnections among the given data carefully. Was the acceleration of the car constant? Explain your reasoning throughout the history of the motion? Why or why not? straight or curved? Explain why you drew the graph the way that you did. (b) Are the kinematic equations such as 14-art and " = 4At2 applicable (c) Carefully sketch a v(t) vs. t graph that is consistent with the data. Is the graph

Explanation / Answer

if acceleration was constant then

a = 2 S /t^2 = 80/25 =3.2 m/s^2

With this acceleration the car would be at

v = 3.2 *5 = 16 m/s

hence acceleration was not constant.

b) dV =a dt , is alwyas true as it is the basic definition of acceleration and in the small time of dt , acceleration is alwys taken as constant.

c) the graph will be a curved line, as a straight line would mean that the acceleration is constant ,which is not .

it goes below 3.2 in the middle.
