Question

So I am doing a physics final projects on the speed of sound in air vs in carbon dioxide. We used a resonance tube to measure the wavelegnth with just air and after dry ice was added. Our results were calculated with a 384 hertz tuning fork

Without Dry Ice

point 1 resonance 21.5 cm

point 2 resonance at 65.5

temp- 23 degrees C

With dry ice

Point 1 resonance 18 cm

Point 2 resonance 54 cm

temp 21 degrees C

After calculations we found the velocity for without dry CO2 337.92 and the one with is 276.48. Our concern is knowing if our data way off. Theoretically should the speed of sound travel faster in CO2 or in air?

Explanation / Answer

speed of sound in gases,

v = sqrt(gamma*R*T/M)

gamma = Cp/Cv (for the given gas)

R = universal gas constant

T = absolute temperature

M = molar mass

CO2 has molar mass compared to O2.

so, speed of sound in CO2 is less than in air.
