Question

A soldier loses most of her right arm from a roadside bomb, and is fitted with a state-of-the-art prosthesis. The artificial arm includes a computer chip with electrodes that attach to the remaining nerves in her upper arm; she must learn to use these nerves to direct the arm to move and the hand to open and close. This is very difficult! Discuss how this kind of learning is mediated, and the particular challenges faced in learning to use a machine interface. During neural development, axons must navigate a complex terrain in order to innervate their appropriate targets. How do axons find their way. What features of growth cones facilitate this process? Using your neurobiology of disease presentation as source material, describe the core neurological functions that are perturbed in the disease, and the biological basis for them. The focus should be on the biology, not the symptoms.

Explanation / Answer

State of art prosthesis

How this kind of learning is mediated?

In this, an artificial device replaces the missing body part. First a cast of the affected limb is taken in Plaster of Paris. Then, light weight new prosthetic is designed. It is fitted into the bone socket present nearby. Materials like Carbon, titanium and Kevlar are used in making the prosthetic; this makes the prosthetic light weight.

Then electronic device is fitted with this prosthetic, and now it is known as myoelectric limb.

Muscle movement gives signal to electrode; then the electrode converts signal into electrical signal. When the myoelectric limb receives the electrical signal, then the artificial limb starts to perform work. Please note that most electrodes are battery chargeable. The person using it has to take training by a team of doctors to give signal to the electrode in a fast and efficient way.

When the person wants to stop doing work, then electric signal in the electrode should be switched 'off' by the user.
