Question

i need help with these 3 questions please...

The United States produces the majority of its energy by burning coal. Burning 1 kg of coal generates approximately 1.5 x 1021 MeV of energy. How many kilograms of coal (in kg) must be burned to generate the same energy that is contained in the 3.2 kg rock? (Are you impressed by this? What are the implications of this answer for the future energ needs of our planet?) Calculate the Nuclear Binding Energy (in MeV) for Beryllium- 9. Masses relevant to this problem include: mBe-9- 9.0121824 mH = 1.007825u, and mn = 1.008665u. Submit Answer Tries 0/8 What is the Binding Energy per Nucleon (in MeV) for Beryllium-9?

Explanation / Answer

Energy in 3.2 kg mass = m c^2

= 3.2 x (3 x 10^8)^2

= 2.88 x 10^17 J

energy from 1kg coal = 1.5 x 10^21 x 10^6 x 1.6 x 10^-19 J

= 2.4 x 10^8 j

mass of coal needed = (2.88 x 10^17) / (2.4 x 10^17)

= 1.20 x 10^9 kg ...........Ans

mass difference = 4 (1.007825) + 5(1.008665) - 9.012182

= 0.0624 amu

binding energy = 0.0624 x 931.5 = 58.2 MeV .........Ans

binding energy per nucleon = 58.2 / 9 = 6.5 MeV .....Ans
